Virginia City Then and Now

Savage Mansion

1962

Charles Cushman Collection, ID# P12722

September 29, 1962. This was the Savage Mansion. Like so many of Virginia City's "mansions", this wasn't just the home to one family. This was actually the head office of the Savage Mining Company. The upper two floors were used as the residence for whoever the mine superintendent was at the time, one of the perks that came with the job.

After the Savage Mine closed in 1918, the mansion was supposedly handed over to the housekeeper, Mrs. Monoghan. Obviously Mrs. Monoghan didn't have the means to keep it up, since by the 1960s it looked like a carnival spook house.

2004

June 19, 2004. The savage Mansion has since been fully restored. It now serves as private office space, and is closed to the public.
