About Scott Schrantz

After years and years on the Web, and over a year of having my very own domain name, I'm finally getting around to writing something about myself. It's still under construction, as is everything on the Web, so consider this the first draft of my life.

Age: 30
Married: yes, since March, 2001
Living: yes, near Carson City, Nevada. See a photo of my house.

What I Do: I'm a network administrator / help desk tech / webmaster / all around swell guy for an Engineering Firm in Carson City. I also run “The Computer Vet”, a little freelance Web and computer consulting business, out of my home, but since I'm no good at sales or marketing, I'll probably never be able to quit my day job. And I'm the creator of Around Carson, a community blog and info site for Carson City.

Why “The Computer Vet?”
Simply put, because “The Computer Doctor” was too much of a cliche. And my wife and I are animal lovers, so the play on words seemed appropriate. I've always felt that computers are like pets, and I treat them with the same care.

Why do I write here (and here)?
I started my weblog because I've always had this all-consuming desire to be a capital-w Writer. I've never been that great at it, though. I was an unofficial English major during my two years at University, and I took several creative writing classes. But then it just kind of slipped away from me; the ability, the drive, the writing. It was gone.

And then the Web came along, and I see all these ultra-intelligent people out there writing away, and you can get published just by being a computer nerd, and I say to myself “Gosh! I need to be a part of that!” I also know the best way to exercise any muscle (the brain, in this case) is to use it often. So here I am, shoveling dreck upon you, the gentle reader, in a semi-daily fashion, hoping that one day I'll read something I wrote and say, “Say! It looks like I'm a Writer now!”

I'm not holding my breath.

Issues

To put my weblog writings in context, I'm just going to come clean and spell out where I stand on a few hot topics. This way you can know in advance whether to agree with me or tell me to go to Hell.

Politics

It seems like the Web is becoming a huge political playground, and that's a landscape that I don't want to be a part of. I never cared much for politics to begin with, but now I'm absolutely sick of it. I try my hardest to stay out of the squabbles and arguments on this site, and you won't find a lot of political chatter here. You might see some notes on the copyright debate, or business ethics, or the occasional cheap shot against Republicans, but you won't find any links to Instapundit or Andrew Sullivan. Sorry, kids.

For the record, I'm a liberal, as illustrated in my results from the World's Smallest Libertarian-Biased Political Quiz. But I'm not a Democrat. I'm a registered non-partisan, and I voted for "None Of The Above" for President in '96. I favor the death penalty, I'm against America meddling where it doesn't belong, and I think the ideal solution to the Middle East problem is to build an iron dome over the whole place (including Israel) and just let them all kill each other. That's all you'll hear from me.

Religion

Here's another area that I'm staying out of. I'm a staunch atheist, but I'm not in-your-face about it. Don't try to convert me, and I won't try to convert you. And keep it a secret, since I don't want my in-laws to know. <wink wink>
